Created as part of the Outcasts series in 2020, this work emerged from a process of radical transformation. Earlier paintings — once set aside — were not destroyed, but reactivated. Portions of the original surface were concealed with white acrylic and masking tape, then reintroduced through neon spray interventions. What might have been erased instead became layered history.
A seated woman occupies the center of the composition. Her posture is relaxed yet alert. Her face is softly blurred; her sharp red bob anchors her presence. The armchair is rendered in painterly greys, executed in classical oil technique. In contrast, her long boots rupture the realism — executed in vivid, almost plastic orange spray paint and overlaid with circular fragments of gold leaf. They function almost as signals rather than garments.
Behind her, a standing lamp casts an unnatural, neon-green beam of light. Within this radiant corridor, a blue bird approaches. The woman’s gaze meets it.
The bird carries symbolic weight. It suggests annunciation — a quiet reference to the classical motif of the messenger, the bearer of news. While the painting adopts a bold, pop-inflected visual language, its subtext reaches toward something archetypal: the moment before change.
Her body is still, but the tension lies in anticipation. One hand rests on the armrest as if she is about to rise. The atmosphere suggests that she has been waiting — and that what approaches is both desired and inevitable.
In The Story About Us, transformation is not violent. It is luminous. It arrives as signal, as color, as interruption.
